Greetings from Colorado! I have a 54 Willys Utility Wagon with the L6-226 and a Carter YF 2467S. Been driving it for almost 15 years (about 30k miles) and it runs great. Over the years, I have noticed that occasionally, the base of the carb and phenolic spacer appear damp, Yesterday, I went to start it. Normal procedure is full choke and don't touch the gas pedal. Usually fires right up and I push the choke in about 2/3 until it warms up a little. This time it stumbled a bit like it flooded, and it took some working the choke and gas pedal to get it to smooth out. Once it smoothed out I backed out of the garage and noticed a good sized puddle of gas on the floor. I popped the hood and sure enough there was gas around the base of the carb and phenolic spacer and also on the intake manifold. I cant tell exactly where it was leaking from. Any ideas on what may have caused it to puke so much gas out? I am assuming that I should send it in to be completely rebuilt. Note the stain to the left of the base of the carb where the gas was leaking. Thanks for any advice.

Welcome! This type of leak is generally caused by trash in the needle and seat. I see a Ford-style fuel filter. When was the last time it was replaced? What is the condition of your fuel tank? Can I assume that you're burning Ethanol Gas as a Colorado resident?

Thanks for the quick response. The fuel filter was replaced about 500 miles ago. It is the same type of fuel filter that was on it when I bought the wagon. The gas tank is in good shape. Yes regarding ethanol gas. I run the lowest octane at the pump (usually 85). We are at about 5000 ft above sea level. This is a high altitude engine (7.3 vs 6.7 compression). Just fyi I started it this morning and it fired right up. No leaks or dampness at the base. Weird...

It was probably trash in the needle and seat. Most likely picked up at the gas station. Rule of thumb. If there is a tanker making a delivery to the station do not buy gas for at least a couple of hours. That is until the garbage at the bottom, which is being stirred up, has settled to the bottom again.

Many thanks for the info! I will keep an eye on it and keep a fire extinguisher handy! You mentioned the Ford style fuel filter, is there a specific filter I should be using?

Rule of thumb. If there is a tanker making a delivery to the station do not buy gas for at least a couple of hours. That is until the garbage at the bottom, which is being stirred up, has settled to the bottom again. Isn't that urban myth-legend advice from 75 years ago?
Pretty sure every gas pump nowadays has a filter on it, maybe two. And so does your engine. Belt and suspenders.
How would you know when a tanker left? Maybe it left 10 minutes before you got there.
Some old country stores around here probably have tanks in the ground for 50 years and don't get around to changing filters very often. Buying there could be taking a chance.
I always thought the best advice was to buy gas from a popular station that sees lots of cars every day.

JBCO. Ceramic is the best filter you can buy. Find them at this link. FILTERSI restore, sell, and service Carter Lifetime Ceramic filters. Cleaned properly once a year, they will last for years. If fuel tank rust becomes an issue there is a small device called a "Magnatrap" which is a magnet mounted inside the cap of the Carter and it will catch and hold those rust particles preventing them from entering the carb. RonD. It may be an urban legend but I've observed it for going on six decades and have never had a problem. Of course, I have a Carter Lifetime Ceramic filter, with a Magnatrap installed.

I guess we're even? I've never observed it for going on six decades and have never had a problem.
Not arguing. Just a different opinion. To each his own.
