Maybe you guys can help.
My cj3a engine has the large rear flange that partially covers the timing inspection hole making it near impossible for a old man to get twisted up enough to see the marks. I have a spare (seized) engine that came with the deal, engine s/n - R3J158838. This engine has the timing marks on the timing gear cover. There are two marks on the cover and a notch in the crankshaft pulley. Can I just swap the covers and pulleys to gain a more accessible timing check?

Yes!, If you can get the pulley off without destroying it, lol... Lee

thanks for the info Lee. This should make it a lot easier to set the timing.

thanks for the info Lee. This should make it a lot easier to set the timing. You do not have to change out the front cover!, an F head powered truck or wagon had a bolt on timing indicator, if you can find one at one of the vendors it would save a lot of work!, just say'in... BTW, were here to help, Lee

If I can find the indicator then all I would need would be a pulley with the timing notch. This sounds a lot easier to do and I would keep the setup I already have on the spare engine.

You can also add a notch to the existing pulley. We can help you place that notch if you find the pointer Lee mentions. You could also do what Willys suggested at the time...

This Hawky guy is amazing! Did you know that when remote camping/Jeeping he has a tent for himself, and-----------one for his Jeep! Unbelieveable.

Well, if the ole gal got him to his camping spot she deserves a dry spot for the night. Might even slip a shot of Mr.Beam into her crankcase!
