About a year ago, on Ebay, I found an original large-style glass-bowl Carter fuel filter which was missing the ceramic insert and spring. It did have a gasket but it was old and rather dry. After some searching I found a universal Carter fuel filter which is similar to the old metal-bowl style. It is, unsurprisingly, not of the same build quality as the original filters but will do the job, is relatively inexpensive ($12-15) and does not require one to purchase paper filter elements.
The parts are interchangeable with the original large-style glass-bowl filters. Can be found by searching "Carter GF 827" on Ebay. Not sure if they are new, or newish-old but can't seem to find them anywhere other than Ebay and saturnsurplus.com. Cheers..
