Extended it to drive the pin in. Will not retract. Put the starter back together and cycled it few time, tapping with a brass hammer. NO JOY! Am I screwed???

You extended it to drive the pin in? You were replacing the starter drive gear? A burr perhaps in the way. What led you to this point? What's the back story.

The old drive gear was not engaging. All that is brass colored is the new drive gear. Looks same-same old unit. The entire unit is held to the shaft with a roll pin which can only be inserted when the durn thing is extended. This is a Crown part. I’m going to try something else after lunch.

If you hold the armature and twist the drive gear hard ccw it may release and retract..

It has a detent that holds it in the extended position until the engine starts and overruns it. Install it and start the engine. BW

I’ve never had to deal with this particular model starter. I’ll put it in tomorrow. On that note…

Been here also. I took mine apart and re-positioned it. A total pain. Then I found out what Bruce said. The kickback when the engine starts will put it back down by overcoming those springs. duh. Wish I had asked. Oilly

That first happened to me when I was about 15. Flathead V8. I thought the same thing Scout did. Tiny and I struggled with it for quite a while, and finally got it back. The next time, my Dad was there, and said,"Just put it on and start the engine". BW

I am most grateful for the depth and expanse of knowledge represented here. I am rich indeed to have as many friends as I do. Yumpin’ Yiminee!!!!! It works!!!
But of course, this is a Jeep. So that being said, I had to replace the starter solenoid before I could try the starter.
