Many of you will come across this condition. At one time, Stewart-Warner offered a gasoline-fired heater option. The military bought it for the M-38 other trucks, and some boats. This link will take you to the explanation.

I had two VW bugs with a gas heater. I thought I would love them. Well, the pump mechanism on the heater itself had a very thin rubber diaphram. It leaked. Thought I smelled gas one cold day and stopped and popped the front lid. I had a 1/4 inch of raw gas sitting on the shelf under the heater while lit and running. Scared me half to death. I quit using them. I also had trouble with the exhaust and piping rusting out. They also take up alot of room in a VW. Air cooled engine had heater boxes or exhaust manifold heaters. Worked quite well ------IF------ you were going down the road. In town and stop and go traffic---------terrible. A couple of puppies would have been better. Hot water type heaters are safe! Oilly

And that’s why they didn’t last long on the market. Air-cooled recip-motor aircraft still use manifold boxes for heat.
