Hey Friends- longtime listener here. First time caller. Lol. …first time in like 7 years or so. 😃
So, I’m dumbfounded. Up until a month ago, all vehicles in the stable have been running beautifully. However, a month ago, the jeep would start just fine, but under load, it would hesitate a little. It would still run, but I’d have to “feather” the accelerator to get it up to speed in all the gears.
It hadn’t had a tune up in a spell, so I began with changing out points, rotor, condenser and cap. This didn’t change anything. On the 4th of July, I drove cautiously around the neighborhood. Two days later, I thought I would try to dive into the problem. She started fine. I drove her down the street. She started running rough and then died. My stepson and I pushed her home. She won’t start now.
When I’m turning her over, she tries to start, sounds like he ignites, but then dies. More on this in a second.
I rechecked the points gap, checked for spark everywhere (at least in points, plug, and HT wire). Spark is present.
I have had to remove the carb 3x to mop out a flooded manifold. Scout rebuilt the carb many years ago and I’ve never touched it since. I did remove it today to clean it out, just in case…I carefully unscrewed what I could and sprayed carb cleaner and gentle compressed air into it.
Nothing changed. I mopped out the intake mani again. Disconnected the fuel line and stuck an empty water bottle on it and sprayed starter fluid down the throat. The jeep started for a second.
The gas isn’t too too old, but maybe it’s as simple as that.
However, I tried a few more things…for some reason, I’m focused on the spark.
I have confirmed there is a spark at the plugs. However….one of the tests I did was to hook up a spark plug tester light inline. As I’m pressing the foot switch, the tester light shines brightly and then with each revolution becomes dimmer and dimmer.
I just put a new coil in, too, and I did a few tests on my multimeter, too. It seems fine. I feel like everything in the system is good and should work.
My next thought is the foot starter switch…when cranking, could it be doing something to pull voltage away from the plugs? But if it’s the foot switch, why would the jeep have died during her last ride? What am I missing?
