The most used Carter WO of WW2. The 539S. The original was model was designated the 539S-K1 which was used until approximately mid 1942 and then superseded by the 539S. Minor variants included the industrial models 567S, the 572S, used primarily for the PE Generators and Welders. It was later superseded in either late 1947 or early 1948 by the improved 698S. Differentiation is nominally internal. There is no flange stamp number on the early 539. The flange stamp on the later 539 is "407". The flange stamp for the 567S and 572S is "427". The last patent number of eight total on the bowl is "2048535" with the seventh number on a raised section. There is no "Circled-C" logo on the air horn. The finish is aluminum. The Choke Bracket Assembly has the hand throttle cable attachment at bowl level on the early version and at the choke bracket assembly on the later version. The marking on the assembly is a "Circled-C". The marking between the bowl and the idle jet casting is "O 475". The early models had no "bump out" on the bowl, while the later version did. Early models had a two-arm throttle lever, while the later version had a three-arm lever.

Here is some more information on how to identify a 539S. First is a chart that lists distinguishing characteristics of the 539S as opposed to others up to the 636SA
Next is a side by side comparison of the 539S against a 636: A most obvious id mark is the "407" stamping on the face of the foot of the throttle, the thin throttle stop tab and the blank face where a vacuum port is found on the 636: And the most obvious marking on the Main Body/Fuel Bowl is the listing of patent numbers with next to last cast into a raised boss.
