Hello, I'm a subscriber to the OWF and a new subscriber to OJC. I have a '53 Willys PU with the F4-134 engine. When purchased, the engine had a Solex carburetor and ran terribly. I did some research and found out that a Carter YF951S or 951SA was the proper carburetor for the truck (although I don't see it listed in the applications list on OJC). I was lucky enough to find a 951SA on eBay. After cleaning, rebuilding, and installation, the engine runs great. Starts with one or two blips of the key, idles smoothly on the choke and after warmup, and has great throttle response. So, what's the problem you ask? Nothing operational. When looking at diagrams of the linkage from the accelerator pedal to the carburetor, it appears that the throttle lever at the base of the carburetor should point toward the driver's side at idle and toward the passenger's side when the throttle is open. However, the throttle lever on my carburetor operates just the opposite. It points toward the passenger's side at idle and points toward the driver's side when the throttle is open. When the carburetor was installed, the bell crank on the driver's side of the block had to be reversed so that the throttle lever would move toward the driver's side to open the throttle. Is the throttle lever assembly operating correctly or is there an issue causing it to operate in the reverse direction? Thank you. CarlM

Please show photos of the entire linkage assembly. This will help greatly in determining if there is a problem.

Left to right: Throttle rod from accelerator pedal to lower bell crank Rod from lower bell crank to upper bell crank Rod from upper bell crank over the head to carburetor throttle linkage connection Throttle lever on back of carburetor (Lever is pointing toward passenger's side. Must be moved toward driver's side to accelerate.)

Is the throttle plate above the shaft or below? Yes. There is a difference between the book drawing and how it is set up now. It could be that whoever made up the throttle used a different shaft or milled it incorrectly. As long as you have no performance problems, you can leave it alone.

What would need to be done to the carburetor to correct the direction in which the linkage operates?

A new shaft would have to be milled.
