The flange base opening on my Carter WO is about 1-3/16 inch while my Solex carburetor flange base opening is about 1-1/4. The flange base gasket and intake manifold openings are about 1-3/8. Nothing matches. I can't get a satisfactory answer in the CJ2A Forum, other than that's just the way they did it, don't worry about it. Does anyone here have a better answer?

Which WO throttle base? There should be numbers stamped into the bottom of the throttle. 505, 407? Is the intake for a standard L-134 in a Jeep with carb mounting stud alignment parallel to the head? Pictures would help.

You have been told correctly. It doesn’t matter. What’s more important than throttle bore diameter is venturi diameter, and unless Rick has that spec somewhere for the WO, we have no idea what it is. And we still wouldn’t know what the venturi diameter is in the Solex. As far as the mis-match between the carb and manifold, so long as the carb bore is smaller than the manifold bore, there is no disruption in flow. If the carb bore was bigger than the manifold bore, then it could upset flow. The “step” as it is could act as an anti-reversion feature, but we’re getting ‘way into things that are beyond our concerns with this engine/fuel delivery system. Put the WO on and run it. Forget about this issue and be happy. BW

Is the Solex for a L-134 ?, or an F-head, that’s about the difference between a W-O and a YF bolt pattern.

Scoutpilot, this is Mark, you just finished rebuilding my WO and shipped it back today, so I don't have it yet, but from photos I took there is the number 458 stamped on the side of the throttle base, if that's what you mean. This is from a 1946 CJ2A, L134, and I think the carburetor and intake manifold are original. I had been driving the vehicle successfully with the Solex but decided to have the original Carter WO rebuilt.

I apologize for not getting back sooner. "I 458" is the general design number for the throttle base. In working on your carb I observed that someone prior to me has ground some metal off of the bottom and now no number exists there except for my stamps, "OJC" and my date code "K22", for November 2022. It is definitely the "505" version of this general design. What Bruce told you is correct. I would have told you if there had been an incorrect throttle base attached.

I don't know anything about Carter carburetor numbering. Why is there not 505 listed in the Carter Carburetor Application List?

Because 505 is a part number for the WO 636S and SA.

OK, good, that fits with it being the original carburetor from 1946. Thanks.
