When helping newbies, I’ve heard guys say, “What did you do last? Go back there and see what you screwed up “. Often it leads to the problem. My ‘48 “Lefty” had been running fine. I enjoyed starting it up and letting people listen to it idling at 450 rpm. It sounds like a Singer. I knew there was a problem with the starter, it would crank slowly but always fire up. I decided to put a different starter in it. Picked one out of my “stock” that looked pretty good and put it on. It was worse. Wouldn’t start at all now. Charging the battery helped, but only for a few minutes. I load tested the battery, and aha! Theres the problem, the battery died. What a co-inkydink. Went to town and bought a new battery. Cranks like crazy now, but will not start. What th’! Itll fire once and kick the starter drive out, but that’s it. Looked down the throat, no accelerator pump squirt. I pulled the top off, checked the float level etc, and found the pump nozzle plugged. Got the pump working but still no start. Now what? 90% of fuel problems are ignition, right? I checked the points, they were a little close so i filed them a bit and set them. Now it starts! But wait - you gotta choke the hell out of it to get it to start, and then you hafta keep playing the throttle to keep it going, and if you push the choke in even 1/4”, it dies. Now. Right Now. So today i took the carburetor off, took it inside, and rebuilt - did I say that? More correctly, “R&R, disassemble and cleaned” it. I found the low speed jet and the idle well jet both plugged and some dirt/junk in the bowl. Im confident that when I get it back on, itll run like a new one. Now. “Go back to what you did last”. How in the hell does changing the starter and the battery cause the carburetor to be plugged up?! 😵💫 BW

Sounds like the fuel tank needs cleaning 😂 it’s amazing how people continue to clean & rebuild a carb continually and never bother to clean the tank 😬 🤭

This is the first time I’ve been inside this carb since I put this engine in the jeep. The carb was on the engine when I bought it. I did my best to clean the tank - drained the old gas, put in some new, sloshed it around and drained it, repeat, repeat. Looking inside, it looks clean. The slosh-and-drain gas, I strained through a paint strainer and burned in my M. It worked fine in there. The gas cap on the M is stamped “BUY CLEAN FUEL - KEEP IT CLEAN”. And that’s where i get rid of all of my dirty and old rotten fuel. 😆. Anyway, I think I’m going to put a fuel filter on the carb inlet, although I’ve always wondered about the extra weight hanging from the inlet on the carb. I dont have a Carter filter, will a Delco be alright? 😉 BW

The weight of a filter with an aluminum top is negligible. Using a steel fuel line to it will give additional support.

I dunno….. Going back to “what you did last” works pretty good for me. Probably because 90% of my problems are 100% self-inflected, so there is a 50/50/90 chance that I’ll find the dumbassery I committed that became the root cause of said problem, that probably wasn’t a problem to begin with. On the other hand, if you are like Bruce and know what you are doing, the dumbassery to intelligent reasoning ratio should be the opposite and therefore the end results should be directly proportional. Your mileage my vary.

I put the carburetor and its new fuel filter on yesterday. I didnt “prime” anything because I wanted to see how long it would take to fill the filter bowl at cranking speed. It didn’t take long! And as soon as it filled and fuel entered the carb, it fired right up! Settled down and idled like it should until it warmed up and I could open the choke, and then it continued to idle nicely. I loved the sound of it idling at 450 before, but I turned it up to 600, it responds to the throttle better. The Moraine (It doesn’t say Delco on it anywhere) filter has a sintered bronze filter in it similar to the ones we used to find in GM’s Carter and Rochester carbs, but considerably bigger. It should do a good job, and we’ll see what winds up in the bowl. I’m much happier now. 😀 BW
