Fuel strainer maintenance:
Morning Scout-
BLUF: Any recommendation on getting the drain plug-bolt loose on the Fuel Strainer bowel on a 1945 Willys MB?
Background:
I am going thru the fuel system of my 1945 MB; it was renovated back in 2006 and I purchased it in Oct 2020. It came out of Arizona and is very complete from what I can tell. The previous owner basically took it to shows – and apparently did minimal maintenance and operation over the past 15 plus years; (only 1,600 miles)
I am in the process of going thru the fluids.
I do have gunk-water and rust in the fuel Tank; (you already helped me with getting the carb unclogged by tapping on the top/back with a screwdriver handle).
I have drained the tank and added ethanol free fuel. I am looking at get the tank cleaned down the road- but want to get it up and running in the near term by going thru the fluids and seeing what else I find.
I have also purchased a ceramic fuel filter from you with two sets of fuel lines to help with install.
To the current problem:
I disassembled the Fuel Strainer to check it:
I suspected I have issues as I could not get the drain plug loose, so I had to remove the bowel by losing the top bolt and carefully dumping the gas into can.
It then took a bit of patience to get the brass strainer (Liquid wrench) out along with the spring.
The bowel had approx a half inch of gunk in the bottom that two days of JB Blaster and Liquid Wrench have now removed.
BUT- I still cannot get the brass drain plug loose.
I have struggled with really cranking on it- as I do not want to misshapen the bowel-
I am looking today at using some heat- a propane torch on the mouth of the bowel- but wanted to see if you might have any ideas- or tricks to help get the leverage to remove the Plug??
I am a bit concerned about weakening the bowel- or misshaping the bowel-
I also realized that I could reinstall it with the plug- still stuck. But I do want to be able to drain it in the future-…
Any recommendations would be welcome.
I am also open to a phone call- as- if you are like me- I talk faster than I type.
