Hello,
New member to this forum 🙂. I’m writing as I’m having an issue with my 1951 M38 that I think is carburetor related but I’m no expert by any stretch. About 2.5 years ago I managed to find and purchase and have currently installed and am using a NOS carburetor on this stock 24 volt L134 engine.
On Sunday, 10 Sept 2019 I took #7 (name of my Jeep 🙂, yup there’s a reason 😂 and no, it’s not that there was 6 others!) to a 1/2 day of work.
I drive my Jeep between 800-1000 miles a year. So not exactly a seldom used vehicle.
On the way home she seemed a little sluggish but nothing terrible, there was an odd noise like a “throaty roar “ when I accelerated. Not too load but a different sound then I’m use too.
Got home no issue, came in got ready to go out with family for a church event, everyone loaded into #7 and she refused to start. Spins as always, seems about to start but just won’t catch. We jumped in family vehicle and off we went.
Hours later I was back home, went out to Jeep and tried it again. Still nothing.
Next day after work I tried it again and after long cranking it started like it was flooded, blew out a cloud of flooded smelling stinky exhaust
and then idled and ran as always. I took her out of garage and slipped off clutch (shame on me) it stalled and refused to restart. Pushed her back into garage and started checking things.
At this point, I’ve only removed the accelerator pump and inspected it. It look wrinkly n poor to me . I’m thinking this crappy fuel with it’s additives and no lead has spoiled this carb.
I have pictures of the accelerator pump but not sure how to insert here.
Any guidance or help would be appreciated
Also, I do have the original carb in storage, wondering about sending it out to be rebuilt and when it’s returned send this one out for a rebuild so that I’d have a fresh spare with better then original gaskets and diaphragms etc. thoughts ?
Thank you!
