Fellas,
Can I reuse the 7 brass self locking nuts on the exhaust manifold on my M38 after removal? Thank you.

Brass self-locking nuts. Isn’t that kind of an oxymoron? I dont know M38’s real well, but the parts list doesn’t show anything special in the way of nuts in that location on the CJ2-A or CJ3A. Just “Nut, Hex, 3/8”-24” I prefer brass nuts in some of these locations, and often re-use them, but I’ve never heard of brass self-locking nuts. BW

You do need lock washers at all studs except where the two manifolds meet in the middle. These two locations require conical washers. RFJP sells them.

Brass self locking nuts? Me thinks that Bubba decided this was a good way to not use lock washers. Are you going for Mil-Spec or just functional? Mil-Spec you want steel nuts and lock washers. Functional would let you re-use the brass nuts if they are in good shape and will hold the torque needed on a manifold stud. If you re-use them, maybe polish them up nice and shiny so they stand out. That would be something a little different than your average Willys engine.

I've had the manifold nuts get loose and did use some cheap internal type star lock washers there. The gasket tends to take a set and with cold/hot cycles, I find you should go back and check these nuts after installing a new gasket. I also used brass nuts. The rear stud will get water dripping on it from the cowl and is the first to rust solid. Even with the rain gutter under the hinge. As far a shiny, if you drive headlight deep behind BW in creeks, they won't shine long. I seem to recall mike experiencing these crossings.

Yes, well, there was one beaver pond crossing that rusted up every nut that wasn't greasy from 3 feet on down. I certainly waited out there long enough for someone to come rescue me! I think I still have mud in my tool box from that adventure.

Do you use the self locking nuts or just brass nuts with lock washers? Brass alloy nuts with star washers. If you use lock nuts and go back in 4 or 5 years, you may twist off the manifold studs.
