My 2a sat most of the winter and till this week. Started every week and let her run for roughly 30 minutes. Kept in a garage (Not heated). Popped the hood and noticed a yellowish varnish building up on outside of carb. Also after 40 miles of local driving with the 87 octagon I found I'm getting a whopping 8 mpg. So how about some hints on what the problem could be. Not using original air filter. Will try to remember how to post pocture.
Is it one of those cute little chrome ones with a paper element, about 4" in diameter? I found out last year that those won't pass enough air to feed a 134 at 10,000 ft or more. That being the case, I'll bet that they don't do a really good job at lower altitudes, either.
Pull your spark plugs to check for their condition. Black is not good. Carbon buildup in the cylinders can rob you of performance. If all it does is idle it won't take long for this to happen. Solution? Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas. And at the first real drive, Start and let it warm up. Pull the accelerator to a good 1800 RPM and slowly pour about half a cup of MMO down the carb. Maintain the RPM while doing this. This will help loosen that carbon and burn it off. It will also kill every mosquito within 100 ft. Warn your neighbors so they don't call the fire department. And get a better air filter.
The air filter is one from Kaiser not paper but screen. Pretty sure she getting enough air. I understand the pouring the oil down the carb. But you also said in the gas too. How much and only once or periodically? Thanks for getting back to me. Had been dealing with the master cylinder building up pressure during ride, finally found the sweet spot on that. So now I can deal with the mpg.

Put the mom in the fuel. 2 oz per 10 gal Went for a ride engine smoothed out after 10 minutes. Road around for 40 miles and refilled gas tank. Only took 2.7 gal. That's 14.8 mpg so either it's running fine now or I messed up on the last check. Time will tell. That ms again for the tip.

Been averaging 14.5 mpg since I'm running it daily now. Quite hapoy with that. Will probably do even better after I install heat shield for master cylinder. Pedal starts getting stiff after a while and I've already checked the adjustment on the rod. After she sits for a while the pedal softens up again and she rolls easier.
Thanks again for all the great tutelage and tips. It's so great that this and the other forums are out there with very knowledgeable people willing to help.
