Hello!
Scout Pilot strongly recommended that I check in here - I have an interesting wiring situation that I could use some help on!
I picked up a VEC 46 2A with column shift last October and have been slowly removing the magic that "bubba" has worked on it for the last 70 years... I have had it to the point of running - it kinda chugged, but it ran - would have to clean the plugs every so often because of fouling. This past spring I put new plugs, wires, distributor cap, condenser and coil in the system - the old parts quit had on me. It would sputter at idle and it would backfire going downhill if i used to transmission to control the downhill speed.
It got to the point that every time you stepped on the gas, fuel would spit out on to the exhaust manifold. The carb was pulled and sent to Scout Pilot for a rebuild. It returned last week and it is a work of art! I don't think it looked good off the factory floor! While the carb was off - the exhaust and intake manifolds were pulled and cleaned/repainted. The exhaust manifold was replaced because of a frozen heat riser. The valve cover plate was removed and cleaned and installed with a new gasket (since that had leaked for who knows how long). The fuel pump was taken off and cleaned and received a new gasket. A fuel filter was placed inline between the fuel pump and carb - that was not there when I picked up the jeep.
Now to the fun part. I followed Scout Pilots starting instructions for a rebuilt carb and the motor would run for 4 or 5 seconds and shut off- redo the sequence and the same would happen. During that 5 seconds - the engine has never run so quietly or smoothly since I have had it. Rick had me trace out some wiring and even then it confounded the both of us - I am not sure how this old girl has been running... Could you please let me know what you think? After yesterday - I am going to rip everything out this winter and rewire it all correctly (when the tub is off and getting blasted and painted) and remove bubbas modifications.
This shows the overview:
