Deduced from above comments and mostly extracted from Scoutpilots post “Timing w/o a Timing Light” dated 1/1/15.
I’m reading above and getting this…as listed below…any further suggestions or modifications?
Warm engine.
Disconnect carb to dizzy vacuum advance line and plug.
Run at about 600-700 RPM.
Adjust advance to achieve highest vacuum.
Retard advance to reduce RPM by 100. Lock down dizzy.
Reconnect carb to dizzy vacuum advance line.
Adjust idle speed screw to achieve highest vacuum.
Adjust mixture screw to achieve smooth idle of 600-700. Or adjust mixture screw to highest rpm then back off to rich 1/4 turn.
Road test.
Tonight’s dial in following above…
History, 380 miles on rebuild, avg 10.4 mpg
Warmed engine
Checked plug gap, .030
Plugs showing white flaky residue with clean white porcelain.
Idling at 7-800
Exhaust humming but put-put-putting unevenly
vacuum fluctuating 19-20”
adjusted to steady 20” idling 750
Retarded timing to slow idle to 650
Results Vacuum now 18” Timing light 3*
Reconnected dizzy vac adv
Vacuum now 19” Timing light 13* RPM 900
Adjust idle speed screw to peak Vacuum 19-1/2” resulted 550 rpm, timing light 3*
Idle mixture screw backed out, no effect
idle mixture screw in till RPM drop then back 1/4 turn
Final result 550 RPM, 19” vacuum, 3* timing light advance, steady humming exhaust.
Road test no ping on hill at acceleration.
Power good. Filled tank will check MPG.
