Inflammatory rhetoric? Defamation or libel? Sycophant media? Paid social influence? Yup, that could describe every party, every candidate, every election. No surprise. Nothing new there.
Since long before 1776, elections have always been a popularity contest. That's the definition.
Difference is that back then dueling was legal so you had to be careful of what you said and who you said it to. Not so much nowadays with ambulance chasing lawyers on every street corner making the laws and then deciding which ones to enforce this week.
Of course, non-stop printing of worthless money doesn't help things much either.
I'm glad to hear the vintage jeep community is predominately solid republican. Sometimes I wonder......

Point taken. Knowing the history of politics I can only think that with today's level of personal access to information, mal-, mis-, or dis-information, ignoring and bypassing the truth, tied to the decrease in the quality of the teaching of history and civics coupled with the push toward a socialist world government and, of course, the non-stop printing of worthless money to buy votes have all contributed to the political swamp populated by a cabal of power-hungry snakes. Shakespeare was right. King Henry VI, Part II: "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."
