You need a gasket. No, you NEED a gasket. Some places, the modern stuff just doesn’t work. I especially can see trouble coming with trying to apply tube-gasket to an oily pump that just came out of a bucket of oil. Gaskets-in-a-tube work best on clean dry surfaces that are specially prep at mfg for that. I can send you some gaskets. B-dubya What - wait. I just remembered something. A friend had a similar problem. Had the pump off several times. Used up some of my extra gaskets. Put #2 Permatex on the gasket every time. I finally took the pump apart and found a chunk of gasket sealer holding the relief valve open. You need a gasket, and it needs to be dry, or sprayed with Copper-Coat or Red-Tack. B-dubya got it, I have copper coat the head gasket stuff. let me double check on the red tack just to make sure i'm square. I have the copper coat. an just like a head gasket, you wanta put a coat on the gasket, and the surface of the part. I should cover the holes of the pump that I don't want any copper gasket in. right ?

Actually tow, those gaskets need a very thin amount. I usually put permatex #2 on my fingers and simply work it on the gasket between my fingers. Just enough to coat the surfaces. Then install without any on the pump or block metal surfaces. A gasket that is oiled and sandwiched between the pump and block won't leak anyway. You just don't want it to squish out a excess and get into the galleries or pump veins. Oilly

I think the washer goes under the Large nut that you remove to get at the relief valve and spring. Smaller gasket is for the flat lid and the other bigger is for the block. All oil pump. As to why the difference, simply different companies.
So, you must be about ready. Make sure you see some pressure on the gauge before you add in spark and gas. Oilly

I have the engine together, plugs in, and down pipe on . that gauge isn't the best, I only reads pressure when I have the drill spinning at high speed. at low speed it never came off the needle. if the engine makes 5 psi at idle. i'm doubt full that it would even read. I was going to take the top off the oil filter, and give it a go.

"I was going to take the top off the oil filter,"
I don't recommend that...

You won't read oil pressure until the whole oil system has filled and is back up against the oil pump. Taking the top off will make a mess. The gauge should read at least 5 before you start it. even the needle coming off the stop post would be good. Or hook the real gauge up and read that. That's what I do.

thanks
