Looking ahead to John's ride next June I am starting to think about how to make a temporary spare tire mount that I can bolt to the draw bar. Looking for opinions on whether you think the draw bar will flex/bend to much with a vertical bar and spare tire assembly bolted to it. I carry my Jerry Can this way with no issues so far and I don't think the spare tire assembly will be much heavier than 5 gallons of gas but it may end up being taller. Again just looking for your opinions.
Rick that is an option but with the spare parts/tools I carry and the little fur ball of a dog I'm not sure if I would have the room. I'm just thinking it would be nice to take the tire and bracket off and leave it off for the week. Still in planning stages.
Glen, welcome to the fold officially! I bought another tailgate and am using a M38 tire carrier. Also a gas can carrier. This is for my CJ2A. I never use the gate anyway, so I'm removing the chains and bolting it shut as m38's did. I'm too lazy to keep moving it. i'll only have one Jeep with the side mount spare. My CJ3A. I'm leaving it stock for now. Oilly
OK guy's, I went over to the 3B bulletin board and brought back the thread about my swing out tire and jerry can rack. On the bulletin board, the third topic is CJ3B Projects. Click on that, and there it is, swing away tire carrier.
My son built this for me. He took a piece of rectangle tubing and tapered the ends and welded a piece in the ends to seal it up. He picked up a wheel hub and cut the flange off. then drilled a hole in the bumper to take the spindle, and welded the spindle to the bumper. He welded four bolts to the bottom to match the holes in the drawbar. He welded two angle irons on the top to be able to bolt the top to the rear frame cross member. On the other end he welded a foot for the swing frame to sit on, but we had to add a piece on the top to stop the whole thing from bouncing on the driver side. He then put a plate on with a gate latch to hold it closed. The whole thing can be removed by taking the nuts and washers off the drawbar and the two bolts from the rear cross member. It works real good for me!!

SBT: looks like your son would have a captive audience in this group .. then again these DIYer types have their own welders and might just swipe his design! Looks like he does great work and it's very functional, and like how it can be removed. That's good thinkin!

oilleaker1: Two of my trees lost large limbs. The deer like eating the leaves. This year-----no spring for us. Will go right into summer.

cline48: If we got the snow you got it would have been disastrous on our trees. They are fully leafed out now.

m38mike: Muley, we spent the day driving mud and exploring new ground for camping near South Park. We came to a reality that we may not have access to the mountain passes we'd like to drive in early July. Kinda trimmed back our scope of what to see.

m38mike: Kinda pretty looking over a steaming cup at the mountains all painted with feet of fresh new snow. Lots of white where rocks were before.
